“Mothering means a lot of work but in the sense it has to do with building human relations and sharing your life with other people. As I made the choice to live as a couple and have children I knew that a lot of my time would be spent with these people. Identity evolves with motherhood. Once that has happened, I felt like I had lost the old self of mine and I had to create a new one for my new life. I can no longer freely choose what I want to do, nor where or when I want to do it. I need to be constantly “disponibile” - in other words, psychologically and physically available
to others.”
